Back-Up Dependent Care, Tutoring Services and Pet Care

Bright Horizons

The Back-Up Dependent Care program provides high-quality, discounted care for your child, adult/elder dependents when your normal care is unavailable or when an unexpected need arises. You can access up to 15 days per employee per year of family care when regular arrangements fall through. Center-based childcare, in-home childcare and in-home adult/elder care are available. Care recipients (whether healthy or mildly ill) include children, teens, adults and elderly family members. Learn more.

How many times can I use Back-Up Dependent Care?

​You can use the Back-Up Care Advantage Program a maximum of 15 days per year. Each time you use the program, you pay a copay of $20 per child per day ($35 per family per day maximum) for center-based care and $8 per hour per caregiver for in-home care (covers up to three dependents). There is 4-hour minimum copay for all care requests.

How do I use Back-Up Dependent Care?

You and your family member(s) must be registered for the Back-Up Care Advantage Program before you are able to make a reservation and use the back-up care services. When you contact the Back-Up Care Advantage Program, a Care Consultant will help you complete registration. You should register in advance so that you are ready to use the Back-Up Care Advantage Program when you need care. 

Once you are registered, you are able to reserve care for any dependent needs you may have. Reservations allow the Care Consultants to secure the type of care you need, on a specific day(s) that you need care and also alert the care provider to the specific needs of your family so they are prepared for the day of back-up care.

How far in advance can I reserve back-up care services?

You can make reservations for back-up care services up to one month in advance online at backup.brighthorizons.com (the username is 'Newell' and the password is 'Newell') or by calling 1-877-BH-CARES (1-877-242-2737). 

When you need to make a reservation for back-up care, a Care Consultant will ask you a few questions to fully understand your needs, such as information about your family member, when you need care and the location where care is needed. The Care Consultant will review potential options with you and will make the arrangements with the provider on your behalf.

Tutoring Services

Tutoring Services are offered under the Back-Up Care program. You can arrange one-on-one personalized tutoring, homework help, and test prep for your school-age child ages 5 – 18 in over 3,000 subject areas, plus targeted support in math and reading. Your tutoring benefit can help your child prepare for college testing and successfully complete college courses. Learn more.

How Does the Tutoring Benefit Work?

You will exchange one use of back-up care for 4 hours of tutoring. Once you request tutoring, you can break those 4 hours into individual sessions that meet your needs. The 4 hours of tutoring must be used within 90 days of placing the tutoring request. You will also be responsible for a copay — equal to the copay for center-based back-up care.

Are There Any Other Steps That I Need To Take To Reserve A Tutoring Session?

Once you request a tutoring session on the back-up care site, you’ll be directed to the tutoring provider — either Varsity Tutors or Sylvan Learning. You will register on the tutoring provider's site and submit your tutoring request there, too. They will get in touch with you to schedule your tutoring session with a tutor that meets your needs.
